Cyanuric Acid

Cyanuric Acid (CYA) is the lifeguard for chlorine in outdoor pools, protecting it from UV rays. But like any overzealous guardian, too much CYA can cause chlorine lock, reducing the effectiveness of this sanitizer.

  • CYA shields chlorine from UV radiation, extending its life in outdoor pools.
  • In high amounts, CYA can cause 'chlorine lock,' where chlorine becomes ineffective, potentially leading to unsanitary pool conditions.
  • Regular monitoring of CYA levels is important. Too low levels lead to rapid chlorine loss, while high levels necessitate more chlorine or even water replacement.
  • Ideal CYA levels range between 30-50 ppm for most pools; in saltwater pools, it could go up to 70-80 ppm.
  • If CYA levels are too high, the only effective solution is to partially or fully drain and refill the pool. Water dilution is key.
