Total Chlorine

Total Chlorine (TC) is the sum of Free Chlorine and Combined Chlorine. A high TC level could indicate the presence of unwanted chloramines.

  • TC reflects the total amount of chlorine present, both active (free chlorine) and inactive (combined chlorine or chloramines).
  • High TC levels, particularly with a low FC level, indicate the presence of chloramines, which are ineffective sanitizers and can cause eye and skin irritation.
  • Regular testing of TC and FC is important to ensure proper sanitation and comfort.
  • If TC is high and FC is low, a shock treatment may be necessary to get rid of chloramines.
  • Generally, the TC level should not be higher than the FC level by more than 0.2 ppm. If it is, it's a sign that your pool may need shock treatment.
